NOTE FROM THE FAMILY:
Johannes Pfaffenbach, came over from Germany in September 1866 when he was 18 years old. Initially they lived on a farm on the south side of Watertown, in what is now the garage at 1208 S. Third Street. In the 1890s, it was a small house with a basement. Later on, the basement was filled in when it was converted to a garage.
Johannes built a new house next door, at 1212 South Third Street, in 1895 when his son, Arthur Fred, was 11. Before 1895 this was farmland. He also built the barn, now used as a garage. Johannes’ pasture land for his cows stretched west to the river at one time but this was eventually sold in the early 1900s.
The top of the garage has a large door in front that was used to load hay into the hay loft. The hay was grown in the field behind the house. It was cut by hand with a scythe, loaded onto a 20’ ladder, and carried to the front of the barn. From there it had to be pitched by hand with a pitchfork into the hay loft. Cows were fed as needed by tossing hay down from the loft through the trap door that’s still in the garage. The house to the south and to the north also had barns and cows.
The only mode of transportation was bicycle until 1921. About that time, Arthur Fred Pfaffenbach bought a 1921 Ford, a hand-cranked Model T. Shortly after that, the barn doors were taken off and garage doors were put on the barn to make it into the “new” garage.
